1st Annual Oregon vs California Senior All-Star Dual
- March, 2005 -
Shasta College - Redding, California

This event was created out of the vision of two men involved in the wrestling communities in Oregon and California. Their arguments over who was the better state in wrestling between California and Oregon. These two men had the idea of the best Senior in each weight class from the respective weight classes facing off in a dual meet each year. The two representatives from each state are Bert Van Duzer from California and Harry Mondale from Oregon.

The ORCA dual showcases the best talent in the senior class from Oregon and California wrestlers. The winning team will take home bragging rights and also the trophy "The Dave Schultz Cup." With permission from the Schultz family, this trophy is named after Dave Schultz, a wrestler who lived in both Oregon and California. He became a great wrestler in US History, and was one of the greatest goodwill ambassadors our sport has ever seen.

Because this is the first year of the match there were some small problems with getting the word out to wrestlers and fans in time to be present. There were many talented wrestlers who had made prior commitments and were not able to attend the dual. Both teams were missing some of the top wrestlers in the state, however each wrestler that was there did a great job representing their state. We look forward in the future to calling this one of the toughest duals in the nation. This is an opportunity for many wrestlers to measure themselves against the top competition from another state. Many wrestlers were also able to make contacts with several college coaches. The event also included a terrific freestyle and greco-roman clinic by Quincey Clark, a 2000 Olypic Team Member. This gave these young wrestlers an opportunity to learn technique from one of our country's best wrestlers.

These are the results from the 2005 match:

There were 12 matches and 2 exhibition matches wrestled between the 2 all-star teams. The teams split wins, each team won 6 matches. However the California All-Star team had one more fall than Oregon, and won the dual. There were many exciting matches during the night. Check back soon for a full report on each match and to look at photos from the event.

05-06 Seniors
Be ready for your shot at this exciting match, plans are already being made for another match between California and Oregon for next year. Next years dual will be held in an Oregon location which is yet to be determined, and Oregon is ready for some revenge.

103 - Branson vs Garcia
An action packed match. At the end of round 1 the score was tied 2-2. There were several reversals and back points awarded to each wrestler. With the biggest going to Garcia in the third round. Garcia was down by two points when he reversed Branson to his back late in the third round. This 5 point move sealed the victory. A great match by both wrestlers!

112 - Baker vs Moreno
Moreno had the advantage on his feet against Baker. Moreno scored an early takedown off of a nice duck-under, and went on to pin Baker at 1:30 in the first round. Moreno was definitely one of the most talented wrestlers on the California team. A 3 time California state champ is a very impressive accomplishment.

119 - Kilkenny vs Zoeteway
One of the closest matches of the evening. Kilkenny had several takedowns on his feet against Zoeteway, but Zoeteway was tough to keep down and had nice reversals and then took advantage of a tough leg ride on top. The match went into ovetime where Kilkenny had nice defense, stopping several offensive attacks before scoring off of his own shot halfway through the OT period. Another great match!

125 - Williams vs Anderson
Anderson had great postition in this match, and scored off of Williams offense several times. His front headlock and front quarter allowed him to score 3 takedowns against Williams. Anderson also did a good job with a spiral ride to control Williams on the mat. Final score was 7-1.

130 - Carter vs Rocha
A lot of action resulted in a low scoring match. Both wrestlers had the ability to stop each others' offensive attacks. Carter sealed the win by taking Rocha to his back in the last 10 seconds of the match. An exciting match that was close all the way to the end of regulation.

135 - Frost vs Soto
Frost had a handful stepping onto the mat with an undefeated California state champ. However, the Marshfield senior gave Soto all he could handle up until the third round. Several scrambles led to lots of scoring by both wrestlers, and left Frost down by one point in the third round. Soto came through with a big turn and ended up pinning Frost at 5:03 into the match.

140 - Elston vs Harvey
Elston of Dallas HS scored an early takedown in this match, but Harvey soon escaped. The match continued to go back and forth until the 3rd round. Elston was leading 4-3 and chose down. Elston got an escape and a takedown, and ended the match on top, using a nice leg ride to keep his opponent on the mat. Elston had good defense to keep Harvey from scoring on several shots.

145 - Dewater vs Gonzales
The first match of the evening, could have easily been the most exciting. Dewater and Gonzales were both state champions and Dewater came into the weekend undefeated on the year. Both wrestlers were very explosive and comfortable wrestling in various upper body ties. Gonzales came out scoring several takedowns, but Dewater did a great job of using switches to reverse and escape from him. This match had several great scrambles. The 2 both had good technique and were very powerful. Gonzales scored a takedown in the 3rd round to put him ahead by two takedowns. The final score was 11-7, and the wrestler's effort was appreciated by all.

*152 - Dewater vs Danz
Dewater had a hard time coming back from his first loss of the season. This match was one of the last matches of the evening, and Dewater had several good bursts, but Danz was too powerful. Danz won the match by decision.

*160 - Farrel vs Urquizo
Urquizo was able to watch Farrel in his first match and did a nice job preparing for this match. He wrestled good on his feet and shut down Farrel's offense. Farrel did a nice job while riding, but Urquizo was also very tough in the top position. Urquizo won the match by decision.

171 - Farrel vs Drake
This was the second match of the night. Farrel wrestled a great match in all positions. He was able to take down Drake, escape from bottom, and was able to turn him by using a force half and a leg ride. Drake seemed more powerful than Farrel, but Farrel was able to stay in good position during the match. Farrel won the match 7-1.

189 - Lee vs Drake
Another close match that ended in overtime. A lot of action on their feet led to many close takedowns for both wrestlers on the out-of-bounds line, but no takedowns were scored in the first 6 minutes. Lee scored a takedown on the edge of the mat with a double leg to win 3-1. A very exciting match.

215 - Wunder vs Nye
Nye started off with some important takedowns. He gained a large lead over Wunder. It wasn't until the 3rd round that Wunder started m=coming back in the match and quickly scored 2 takedowns and didn't allow Nye to get a major decision. The match ended 10-7.

275 - Gerber vs Kaho
Both heavyweights did a great job in scrambles. The Oregon heavyweight was behind in points when he put Kaho on his back and didn't let him off. The pin was an exciting end to the matches between the two teams.
